Why?
We believe that honouring God with our finances through giving to the house of God has biblical basis for those who follow Jesus. It pre-existed the law, when Abraham gave a tithe (a tenth of his income) to Melchizedek in Genesis 14. Contributions, firstfruits offerings, and tithes are established in the law all through Israel's scriptures. Jesus ratifies it to a Jewish audience when He says that tithing you should also do, without neglecting the greater matters of justice and the love of God. The early church is established on a pattern of putting aside funds in proportion to income.
In light of all this, we believe that as Christians, premeditated (considered, thought through), predetermined (decided) percentage based giving is the way to go. This is to provide those who work in the ministry with income, to keep the buildings and services going, and for the provision for the poor. It is voluntary. What percentage is up to each household. Using the fullness of scripture as our measure, Daz and I believe in and practice the following: the giving of a firstfruit offering to a couple we consider our pastors, tithing from our income into the local church, and making giving to the poor and generous living part of our second tithe.
